Breeding Plans and Methodology
I like to plan my breedings long in advance so I can get a big picture of what I’d like my program to look like. I have spent many hours studying and designing mock pedigrees for generations to come in an attempt to hone in on the “ideal” Mudi.
Under the recommendation of reproductive specialists, the method I plan to utilize for litter production is a modified back-to-back plan. Initially, this method went against everything I thought was “correct” in breeding, but further research showed that it is actually more beneficial for the bitch’s health. Therefore, I will aim to breed my bitch on two consecutive heats, followed by a break, and so on. Any puppies I produce will be carefully monitored as they grow, and since I am choosing this method for reproduction, it’s is particularly important that my puppy people understand and follow through with the required health testing and report back to me so that I get a full image of the quality of dogs I am producing. There is something to be said for growing out a litter before producing another with either of the parents - and there are pros and cons to this as well. I’m hopeful that with this method it can be the best of both worlds - carefully monitoring and producing quality pups, while still maintaining what is best for the breeding bitch.
At most, my breeding females will produce 4 litters, and then be spayed. I aim to finish the females breeding career by the age of 7.
