- I'm looking for a puppy right now, do you have any?
Chances are if you contact us looking for a puppy “right now” we will not have anything for you. Therefore, if you are interested in a puppy from us, it is important that you contact us to discuss upcoming litter plans and potentially being placed on a wait list.
Additionally, we do not breed for colour. While the Mudi comes in a variety of colours and patterns, this is the last consideration in mind when it comes
to producing healthy, quality pups. The factors that we place priority on are health, temperament and functional structure.
We do not breed for demand, we aim to improve the breed.

To be placed on the wait list, a deposit of $1,500.00 CDN is required.

- Any other reason the deposit is NON REFUNDABLE.
Why are most of your dogs/litters black?
Black is the most common, classic and dominant gene in the mudi breed. Many of the other colour variants didn’t exist in the breed until more recent years. My goals entail breeding for overall highest quality dogs - which means I prioritize health, pedigree, type and temperament. Variable colours are a cherry on top and not something I take into consideration when matching dogs or choosing dogs to bring into my breeding program. For this reason, my dogs and my litters most commonly include black specimens.
Will you take a dog back?
Yes. It is required that we receive the dog back for whatever reason if you cannot keep it. However it is your responsibility to send it back to us. We will screen any potential homes the same way we did as puppies to find the right placement.
Do you ship puppies?
We would love the chance to be able to meet you, so if you would be able to pick the puppy up from us personally, that would be ideal. We will, however, ship puppies if necessary.
What health tests have your breeding stock completed?
At minimum:
•CERF
•OFA Hips, Elbows and Patellas
•Embark Breeder Panel and/or Canine Healthcheck Panel by PawPrint Genetics

Do you offer a health guarantee at the time of purchase?
We guarantee at the time of purchase that the puppy is free from infection and illness for 72 hours after leaving Roka Mudi Kennel’s premises. All puppies will receive a Veterinarian Health Certificate providing they are healthy at the time of possession while on Roka Mudi Kennel’s premises. For the health guarantee to be valid, the owner must have the puppy/dog seen by a licensed veterinarian within THREE (3) consecutive days of possession at a Veterinarian at the Owners’s Expense. If the Owner fails to comply with this requirement, it will invalidate the Health Guarantee.
Do you sell dogs with breeding rights?
In most cases, each dog sold from us as a pet will be registered through the Canadian Kennel Club as non-breeding.
There are some cases that we would sell a pup with breeding rights:
•Established Reputable Breeders
•Mentorship opportunities
We will not sell a puppy with breeding rights to a pet home.

Are your puppies guaranteed against hip dysplasia?
We stand behind every puppy we produce. We require that the buyer completes the same health testing on their pups that we do on our breeding stock (we need to know what we are producing and this is a way of maintaining quality in the program) such as OFA’s done between 12-24 months of age for hips, elbows and patellas.
Besides genetics, factors that affect Hip Dysplasia are:
In the event that your puppy develops hip dysplasia, we will ask that you remain transparent with us with your dog’s health records and information involving the above so that we can come to terms on an agreement that mitigates the issue and so that I can provide the best support to you possible.
Besides genetics, factors that affect Hip Dysplasia are:
- Nutriton
- Excessive exercise
- Over weight
- Repetitive exercise like jumping
- Too little exercise
- Environment
- Growth Rate
- Muscle Mass
- Hormones

Are all Mudis Reactive?
Kind of (note this does not translate to “aggression”). The Mudi is a breed that was created as an all purpose farm dog. They are not just a herding breed - but also meant to alert to any changes in the environment. As such they are very much a “bark first, ask questions later” type dog. Anything new - be it dogs, animals, people, strange sound etc … will likely be accompanied by alert barking. It is an instinctual trait that can be managed to a degree, but not entirely gotten rid of or trained out. Some are more-so “reactive” than others, but as a rule, it’s fair to expect this and accept it as part of the breed.
Mudis and Epilepsy - what is the risk?
Epilepsy is an insidious and variable illness with many presentations. While I haven’t personally experienced it in the Mudi breed, I had to euthanize my own 18 month old Belgian Malinois due to Limbic Epilepsy or focal seizures. It has an increased frequency in some breeds and the cause is not always well understood. Some of the factors that can cause seizures are as follows:
•Genetics;
•Traumatic Brain injury;
•Brain Tumours or lesions;
•Storage disease;
•Medication/vaccine reactions;
•Auto immune diseases; and
•other underlying health issues
The general understanding is that if a dog presents with seizure activity of unknown origin before the age of 6-7, it is believed to be due to a genetic factor. At this time there is no known reliable test for “Idiopathic Epilepsy” - it is diagnosed symptomatically and through process of elimination. For this reason, it is important that breeders pay careful attention to pedigrees and the known producers of epileptic dogs, and utilize this information to make the most informed decision when it comes to pairing them. It is difficult to escape epilepsy entirely in a Mudi’s pedigree and most have at least one relative who is known to have produced epileptic offspring.
If your puppy is to develop Epilepsy at any time, I will work my hardest with you to brainstorm and find the root of the problem and determine if it is idiopathic in origin. I will support you to the best of my abilities and I will never blame you for the illness. If your puppy is having seizures, I will require that you work with your vet and provide me documentation indicating that the diagnosis is “idiopathic epilepsy”. I’m open to discussing different ways on how to mitigate the issue should it arise. While I may not be able to refund you, some options would be an additional puppy at half price (provided I’m still breeding) and my ongoing support. I will do my best to do right by you and your dog. I will also do my duty to the breed by informing the Mudi community of the pup’s epileptic status so that others can utilize this knowledge in their breeding decisions.

Do Mudis Shed?
Many people think that because the Mudi is curly, that similarly to a poodle, they do not shed. This is not true - all Mudis shed though some vary in intensity.
Some Mudis carry a “low shedding” gene, and other shed profusely. There is still a pretty big variance in coat type in the breed - including texture! Some are more smooth and wavy while others are more harsh, dense and tightly coiled.
Some Mudis also drop their coats and go through periods where they are relatively naked. This can be understandably alarming. Below is a photo example of Vulpix in coat and out of coat.

Do Mudis really bark a lot?
Short answer - yes. The Mudi breed is very vocal. It is a trait that is instinctual to them. If a loud dog is a deal breaker for you, to be safe I would look into a different breed.
In addition to barking, they make all sorts of strange noises! My favourite being their purr/growl sound when they play.

What do you recommend for feeding?
I believe in “feeding the dog in front of you.”
What that means is that there are many diets and nutritional modalities out there - all which come with their own set of pros and cons.
Some dogs will do profoundly better on a certain diet, while others may not tolerate it. Some may have specific nutritional needs requiring veterinary prescription diets. Some people have more holistic views, some strictly scientific.
I’m open to any of these so long as you do your research and endeavour to provide your pup with the best quality food that fits both your budget and lifestyle. I’m always open to chat regarding my opinions on certain foods and if you would like a sanity check :-). I personally feed my dogs a rotation of grain inclusive kibble while treating with raw and various supplements.

What training style do you recommend?
Like my feeding methodology, I also believe in “train the dog in front of you” - ie; training is not a one size fits all. While I have my preferences, I’m open minded to different methods and endeavour to support my puppy people however possible. I will never cut you down or otherwise make you feel belittled for your beliefs and training systems. If you would like some pointers, I am always here to help.
I personally am a balanced trainer, meaning I utilize all aspects of training and all sorts of tools, depending on the specific needs of the individual dog and what is required of it.
I highly recommend, for any puppy owner, to purchase the Micheal Ellis “Raising Your Puppy” https://leerburg.com/ellispuppydvd.htm Video and to study it prior to bringing home your new family member. It offers a great foundation and touches on many areas of training to assist you in building a wonderful training partner and active companion.

What breed would you compare a Mudi to?
Mudis are truly unique and it’s hard to compare them to anything else out there.
Most commonly I like to describe them as a Pumi x Schipperke x Fox hybrid. Or image a herder x terrier x wild animal mix.
They have traits that feel similar to other herding breeds, but others that are very foreign and primitive. They force you to think outside of the box during training and many experience trainers are often stumped by their quirky traits.
They are an amazing breed, but absolutely challenging at times. It’s very important to go into the breed with an open mind, ready to accept the dog in front of you, rather than trying to fit them in a box of preconceptions.
